A Future in Freelance: Proofreading Skills - Pan Macmillan

Closing Date: 13 December, 5pm

Pan Macmillan, in collaboration with the Publishing Training Centre, has launched a new traineeship which includes a proofreading course with the PTC!


This course will be suitable for someone who feels home-based work is a better fit for them and is looking to begin a full time freelance career, or someone who’s looking to do some part-time work alongside other commitments. You don’t have to have publishing experience, but this opportunity is also open to those who do. You will also receive mentoring, feedback and two additional PTC distance learning courses such as Essential Grammar and Successful Editorial Freelancing. These can be completed at your own pace over twelve months.


You must have excellent written English skills, a passion for books and reading, good attention to detail and self-motivation. You will be a self-starter who is good at working to deadlines, digitally literate and based in either the UK or Ireland.

PR Assistant - Hachette Children’s Group

Closing Date: 29 December

Salary: £24,000

Location: Role can be based at any of the Hachette offices which are in London, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Bristol and Manchester. Flexible remote working is also available.


Do you have a passion for children’s books and the media? Hachette Children’s Group are hiring for a PR Assistant!


The assistant will assist the team, help to manage invoices, monitor the press office inbox, provide internal communication as well as customer service in being a first point of contact responsible for responding to queries. You will also maintain the media contacts database, send out mailings, help to keep track of media coverage, look after awards and submissions, organise and book travel and accommodation, attend events and other general administrative tasks such as taking minutes, booking meeting rooms, maintaining the diary and making appointments.


You will need to be organised, have excellent attention to detail, be a strong team player, be able to work collaboratively and have excellent communicative and copywriting skills.

Agent’s Assistant - Madeleine Milburn

Madeleine Milburn is looking for an Agent’s Assistant to work with a highly trained and effective team led by one of the most well-respected literary agents in the industry!


Responsibilities will include digital and diary management, organising trips and hosting events. You will also promote authors, liaise between departments and report on manuscripts.


The ideal candidate will be energetic, highly organised and have a passion for books. The successful applicant will be an avid reader and a team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will need a meticulous eye for detail, have a natural flair for social media, and be able to use and develop systems with ease.

Sales Assistant – Atlantic Books

Closing Date: 8 December, 5pm

Salary: £23,000


Atlantic Books is looking for a Sales Assistant to join their team, working across Atlantic and Murdoch Books.


Your responsibilities will include creating and circulating regular reports, maintaining the UK publishing schedule for Murdoch and reporting weekly publicity updates to customers and reps. You will also set up special prices and discounts, liaise with the Australian office for materials and updates and help coordinate bi-annual Book Fairs. The successful candidate will not need prior publishing experience.

Digital Content Producer - Booker Prize Foundation

Salary: £35,000 - £38,000

The Booker Prize Foundation is looking for two Digital Producers to lead the planning and delivery of online content for their charity.


Responsibilities include creating and publishing engaging digital content, project managing external digital commissions, working with editorial, marketing and publicity colleagues and much more.

Production Controller - Yale Books

Closing Date: 10 December

Salary: £24–26,000

Location: London


Yale books are looking for a new production team member with 1–2 years experience in the publishing environment. This role will involve overseeing the production of both the trade and academic lists, working with both front and backlist titles. You must be fluent with Adobe InDesign and Acrobat and have a strong ability to multi-task. A keen eye for detail will be a must within the role.


This will be a great chance to join a small team and gain experience communicating directly with authors, in addition to the other many departments within the publishing process.

Internships/Apprenticeships


Editorial Assistant – Paid internship, Elwin Street Productions/Modern Books

Closing Date: 15 December

Salary: £10,000 - £15,000

Elwin Street Productions are looking for an Editorial Assistant to join their team as an intern!


The role involves being a key linchpin between the editorial, creative and sales department, and may develop into a permanent role. Duties include supporting the Director, competition research, briefing and working with freelance designers, and using InDesign. You will also be assisting in preparing files for press and materials for eBook conversion, amongst other responsibilities.


The ideal candidate will have a degree in a relevant creative or humanities subject, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Acrobat Pro, as well as a strong creative eye and design skills. You will need to work well as part of a team.
