Puffin has launched a nationwide campaign for Adam Kay’s children’s fiction debut. The campaign is expected to highlight Kay’s unique blend of humour and education, which has already made his previous works immensely popular. Teaming up with illustrator and fellow comedian Henry Paker, as well as Puffin publishers, Kay will support the charities MediCinema and Starlight. He will also take part in donating Puffin mini-libraries and Dexter play kits to hospitals to enrich the lives of young patients and their families.
Dexter Procter the 10-Year-Old Doctor is the first novel in a significant eight-book deal with Puffin, including picture and novelty books by Kay and Paker; “the ultimate pairing for readers of all ages.” The novel will be Kay’s first children’s fiction hardback and will be published in autumn 2024.
According to Puffin, Dexter Procter the 10-Year-Old Doctor is a medical mystery series “which demystifies medicine and hospitals for young readers.” Jacqueline Wilson has commented on the novel, saying it is “[o]riginal, very funny, ultra-informative – and children will love all the disgusting parts.” David Baddiel has said that “[i]f laughter truly is the best medicine, book this hilarious appointment with Dr Procter immediately.”
A former doctor, Kay is the author of seven books and has sold over five million copies. His children's novels have been translated into twenty-nine languages and sold over 750,000 copies, making him one of the UK’s bestselling children’s authors. His first picture book Amy Gets Eaten was published in 2023.
Kay first came into success after writing his debut book This Is Going to Hurt, which became a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and has since been adapted into a BAFTA-award-winning BBC comedy drama. The novel also received a groundbreaking four National Book Awards and sold over three million copies. His book, Kay’s Anatomy, became the fastest-selling children’s general non-fiction hardback of the decade.
