SAIL Fest to Bring Together South Asian Children’s Artists and Writers

By Medha Godbole Singh

What happens when South Asian children’s authors, illustrators and poets converge? A beautiful celebration of vibrant community and culture, through the lens of children’s literature and illustrations. SAIL Fest, the first of its kind to take place in the UK, aims to replicate exactly that. The first edition of this one-day fest will be held on 6 September 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the British Library.

The festival is committed to bringing together the South Asian children’s book community – from artists to booksellers, teachers to librarians, and publishers. The festival will endeavour to strengthen ties among authors, poets and illustrators creating books for readers between the ages of zero to seventeen. The festival curators are also looking to develop the event as the driving force for encouraging and promoting emerging South Asian talent.

This unique festival has been curated by a group of women who have carved a niche for themselves when it comes to children’s books in the UK. Sanchita Basu De Sarkar, Chitra Soundar and Sinéad Gosai are the women behind the initiative. While Sanchita Basu De Sarkar is an award-winning bookseller and retailer, Sinéad Gosai is a freelance PR consultant. Chitra Soundar, an award-winning author and creator will bring her extensive writing experience to the venture. A touch of expertise and creativity from these three will make the festival one of the events to look out for in September.

The festival is free to attend and will offer something for everyone – whether it is panel discussions or storytelling sessions. All the sessions of the day will have a single, common thread running through them – exploring the rich South Asian cultures, their history and mythology. The festival will throw a spotlight and uncover the mystique behind the publication of South Asian literature.

Perminder Mann, CEO of Bonnier Books UK will deliver the keynote speech followed by a series of thought-provoking sessions covering a plethora of themes and genres like science fiction, picture books, and more.

While speaking about the festival, Sanchita Base De Sarkar said that their aim is to harness their collective power to help create real change for South Asian creatives, and she hopes that SAIL Fest can unite the community, create more lasting opportunities and provide a safe space to achieve that.
