Bright Futures Sci-Fi Book Club: The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 1 (All Systems Red)

The Lighthouse will be hosting their July book club meeting to discuss Martha Wells’ All Systems Red. This science fiction novella is the first volume of The Murderbot Diaries. The story introduces Murderbot, a self-aware security unit that has granted itself freedom by hacking its own governor. In this book, Murderbot will accompany a research team to another planet with the mission to protect them from the dangers of the unknown. But, now that Murderbot has gained consciousness, it will also have to battle with its growing sense of awareness and existence, desires of isolation and the unavoidable feelings that uncomfortably creep into its being. In the search for its truth and identity, Murderbot will discover something that could irreparably change its way of being and thinking. An Evening in Conversation with Yael van der Wouden

Join Women’s Prize winning author Yael van der Wouden at this talk delving into her highly acclaimed debut novel The Safekeep.


Full of fury and simmering tension, The Safekeep details the surprise arrival of Isabel’s brother’s girlfriend at her meticulously maintained cottage in 1960s Netherlands and the fallout that occurs. The event will begin with an interview with van der Wouden and end with a Q&A and book signing. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about an author at the beginning of a very exciting career!
