Anticipating Autumn

By Rebecca Weigler, Steph Carroll, Caitíe Woolridge and Charlotte Horsfield

As the days get colder and the autumn decorations fill the shelves, there’s nothing better than cosying up with a hot drink and a new book. Here are some of our recommendations as we enter into the autumn season.

My Vampire Plus-One by Jenna Levine

26 September 2024, Penguin

The author of the bestselling novel My Roommate is a Vampire, Jenna Levine, returns with another delightful and sultry romance set in the same world.

When Amelia desperately needs a date to a family wedding, she turns to Reginald, a mysterious gentleman who may be hiding more than arrogance behind his gorgeous features. As the two prepare for their fake dating extravaganza, they grow closer than they could have anticipated, but the secrets of Reginald’s past – and his present – may cause more harm than good for Amelia’s plans.

With all the humour, heat and wit from the first novel, as well as a wonderful exploration of the popular fake dating trope, My Vampire Plus-One is sure to sweep you off your feet this spooky season.

Nothing Like the Movies by Lynn Painter

1 October 2024, Simon and Schuster Ltd

This autumn, dive into the sequel to the bestselling book, Better Than the Movies from author Lynn Painter. If you are a hopeless romantic with a love for the grumpy x sunshine trope, then this is the book for you.

After losing his dream girl, girl-next-door Liz, Wes embodies a true rom-com hero to try and win her back, which he knows won’t be easy since he broke her heart. Liz loves big romantic gestures, and with a new guy ‘friend’ on the scene, Wes knows he needs to make every effort for her to fall in love with him again. Wes knows Liz is his endgame, and he's determined to make her see him the same way.

However, when he doesn’t seem to be able to break down the divide between himself and Liz, he begins to think that maybe he needs to accept that things are truly over for good.

This second-chance romance is not one to be missed. Make sure to read to find out if Wes will manage to win Liz back or whether it’s time he accepts that their love story has come to an end.

A Pirate’s Life for Tea by Rebecca Thorne

3 October 2024, Tor

Following on from the events of Sunday Times bestseller, Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea, the story follows Kianthe and Reyna as matchmakers in an epic new love story.

Tasked with saving their hometown, Kianthe and Reyna are on the hunt for some stolen dragon eggs. The answer to their quest is found in Diarn Arlon, a local lord with a problem of his own. Arlon’s supplies are being hijacked by river pirate Serina, who has a penchant for stores of wheat, grain and tea leaves.

Striking a deal with Lord Arlon, Kianthe and Reyna must bring Serina to justice in order to secure their bounty. Assisting in their quest is Arlon’s constable, Bobbie, who also happens to be Serina’s childhood friend. With her own past to reckon with, Bobbie is as determined to capture Serina as Serina is to evade Bobbie.

As Serina and Bobbie are brought back into each other’s lives, old feelings reignite. As they struggle to reconcile from their past loathing, it’s up to matchmakers Kianthe and Reyna to give this romance a helping hand.

The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak

8 October 2024, Flatiron Books

Estranged father, Frank receives a life-changing phone call from his beloved yet distant daughter, Maggie. This is a call that Frank has hoped beyond hope would come, yet never seemed possible until now. Frank is overjoyed when Maggie invites him to her upcoming New Hampshire wedding.

The wedding is set to be the event of the year for New Hampshire since Maggie is marrying Aidan, the son of a wealthy tech tycoon. Maggie’s family wealth and roots hugely contrast with Frank’s. Frank tries his best to fit back into his daughter’s life by forming relationships with Aidan’s family, though this proves difficult given their arrogant demeanour. It seems Frank is not the only person to find Aidan’s family challenging when the locals reveal that this rich family is much despised by all who have crossed paths with them.

There appears to be more to why this family is hated so deeply than just a simple case of jealousy. Frank unexpectedly finds himself turning detective to uncover this family’s secrets.

He must tread carefully in order to avoid crossing any boundaries or upsetting his future son-in-law, or he risks losing his daughter – this time for good. However, Frank will do anything to protect Maggie, even if it means risking his life.

This novel is a page-turner that will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat. It skilfully celebrates the immense and unique father-daughter bond that prevails in this narrative despite years of estrangement and the challenges of navigating new people joining the family. Both Maggie and Frank learn that their bond can survive whatever life throws at it.

A thought-provoking read that teaches us it is never too late to heal family ties, no matter how much time has passed or how things have changed.
