Editorial Assistant at Castle Media

Want to build your written skills with a dynamic magazine team? Interested in the homes market and being part of the UK's longest running, self-built magazine? Then Castle Media might have the right role for you with their Editorial Assistant opening.


In this role you will work on the Build It magazine, supporting the editorial team by writing stories, in-depth articles and uploading regular content. You will need to research, collate and source high quality images to illustrate these. You will also be expected to write at least one feature per month for their website to engage readers, organise and upload digital editions of the print magazine and support the team’s awards scheme and live exhibitions/events.


The ideal candidate will have experience in editorial (of editing, proofing and writing engaging copy) and be able to translate industry-specific language into clear, accessible content. You will also be good at scheduling and have an eye for visuals. Experience with Adobe InDesign, SEO and website CMS is preferable.


This position is based at their refurbished Hammersmith office.

The Observer Journalism School Training Experience

Keen to delve into the journalism world and to work with professional editors and journalists whilst gaining valuable experience? Well, The Observer Journalism School training experience might be perfect for you!


This week-long, intensive training experience will allow students to write great stories for The Observer and complete assignments led by editors and journalists. Students will also take part in editorial meetings and public conferences, contributing to discussions, presentations and pitches. It’s a perfect opportunity to gain industry experience whether you’re looking to go into journalism or other areas of the publishing industry. 


You will cover topics such as what makes the news, how to find a story, how to tell stories in audio and how to find news in data. You will also explore media law, learn how to conduct an interview and gain insights into running an investigation, pitching to magazines and writing reviews. 


The Observer Journalism School is open to applicants that are over eighteen and is free to attend. Applicants will be provided with meals and refreshments, and for those coming from outside of London accommodation will be provided. No prior experience or training is required, just a passion for writing and journalism.

The Financial Times Journalism Apprenticeship Scheme

Looking to get into journalism but can’t seem to get your foot in the door? The Financial Times apprenticeship scheme is open and here to help! Not only will you gain an NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) qualification within 18 months, but you’ll have the incredible opportunity to work for both Manchester Evening News and The Financial Times.


A good journalist is always willing to learn, so being conscientious and hard-working is a strong quality to showcase in your application. You must be curious about people, governments, business, money and persistent in seeking the truth. Applicants should be able to work with tight deadlines and be flexible when required. You should also be adaptable in dealing with the pressures of a modern newsroom, especially as you will be moving between the Manchester and London offices. Apprentices will work on multiple stories, so being open-minded and interested in different perspectives will make for a strong candidate.


This scheme is only open to those without a degree or those who do not have a university application under consideration. Aspiring journalists from minority ethnic or disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as well as those living in the Greater Manchester area.

Receptionist at Hachette UK

Do you want to work for a publishing powerhouse? Do you have previous experience in a front of house role? You’re in luck because Hachette UK are searching for a Receptionist for their London office.


For this role you will need to provide a high-quality reception service, greeting both staff and visitors upon arrival and departure. You will also work closely with the FOH (front-of-house) Security Officer, processing security pass requests for new starters and replacement passes (ensuring they are printed for collection), and issuing and managing the return of day passes. Strong communication skills and a good customer focus are key to ensure all queries are responded to and resolved quickly, only escalating these where necessary. As part of your day-to-day responsibilities, you will monitor the room-booking App Condeco for visitor bookings, monitor the starters and leavers spreadsheet and update the system Integra accordingly. You will also raise purchase orders and review, answer and redirect emails promptly. You must also keep the reception desk clean and tidy, with sensitive information and passes kept out of sight. General administrative assistance may also be required at times to assist the wider facilities team.


Hachette UK are looking for a candidate that has a can-do attitude – polite, courteous and personable with a collaborative working spirit. You should demonstrate that you work well under pressure and that you are able to multitask and prioritise a varied workload. Strong IT skills are highly advantageous, and you should be proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook.


This position is based at Hachette UK’s Carmelite House office in London, and is a 12-month full-time contract.
