British Library Training Placement


Closing Date: 23 June 2025

Allowance of £1,662 (thirty hours a week for four weeks)

Are you hoping to kickstart your career? The British Library is offering a total of five training placements this summer!


Designed to help you to gain valuable experience and explore career avenues in the library and creative sector, you will learn on-site from experienced library staff. The Early Careers team will create a programme of activities which you will follow, managing your time to attend tours and career talks alongside completing work tasks and group projects.


This is a valuable opportunity to learn what the library and creative sector is and understand how the British Library fits into it. You will develop skills in supporting projects, librarianship, problem solving and engaging with audiences. With your fellow trainees, you will participate in developing a project to bring the British Library to life. There will also be opportunities to work on your application and interview skills through CV and interview workshops.


These placements are offered in connection with Creative Access’ Positive Action Scheme and open to individuals under-represented in the creative industry. They are looking for applicants that show an interest in the British Library and who display an interest in a career in the heritage, cultural and library sector. You will be organised and able to prioritise efficiently to manage a varied workload, keen to learn and proficient in using a computer with experience of MS Office programmes, or happy to develop your IT skills with staff at the library.


The placements are four weeks long beginning in August 2025. Working hours will be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday on-site. However, there is a possibility to discuss working from home as part of the placement.

Felicity Bryan Publishing Mentorship Scheme

Are you interested in becoming a literary agent? The Felicity Bryan mentorship scheme is officially open, giving one lucky applicant the chance to carry out placements at prestigious publishing houses!


Felicity Bryan was a highly respected literary agent who founded the largest agency outside of London. This paid mentorship scheme was created to honour her legacy – and is designed to be accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstances.


The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with companies such as Little, Brown Book Group, Profile Books and Daunt Books. However, don’t be disheartened if you don’t get the role; shortlisted candidates will be offered six months of one-to-one virtual mentoring with a member of the team. This is a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the industry and receive support with your CV and cover letters.

This role is based in North Oxford and a stipend will be available to cover the cost of accommodation if needed.

Customer Experience Specialist at Bookshoppe Ltd (Trading as Bookshop.org)

Salary: £26,200 (or £28,800 if you live and work from home within Greater London)

Location: Remote (with the ability to travel to London)


Want to be part of an organisation that champions independent bookstores and places efforts to support local bookshops nationwide? Looking for a remote role? Bookshop.org are looking for a Customer Experience Specialist to join their team.


Reporting to the Customer Strategy and Experience Manager, you will be providing support to customers via email and social media, while advocating for the company and the indie bookshops under their wing, showing empathy and a willingness to create steps for change. Admin tasks include taking on customer queries and ensuring the smooth-running of orders and stocks, notice recurring issues from customer’s feedback and assisting with email newsletters and working to enhance bookshop’s performances.


The ideal candidate will have experience in customer service and be a confident, friendly communicator that can relay Bookshop.org’s values. You will need to have a strong initiative working in a remote team, staying calm during busy periods and be able to adapt to changes from a growing company. You will also be comfortable using digital systems and Google Suite.


The role is full-time and remote, with expected quarterly meetups in London alongside bookshop visits and industry events.

Publishing Intern at The Emma Press

Location: Birmingham


Aspiring to work in sales, publicity or marketing within the publishing industry? Keen to gain hands-on experience at an independent, award-winning publisher outside of London? The Emma Press – based in Birmingham – are looking for a Publishing Intern to join their team for seven months, working on live projects including two novels, one poetry pamphlet and one children’s poetry collection.


The Emma Press specialise in poetry, short fiction, essays and children’s books and have been shortlisted for the British Book Awards Small Press of the Year in 2024 and 2025. They champion diversity and representation in the publishing industry and are offering this position to those under-represented in the creative industries.


As a Publishing Intern, you will be completing a variety of tasks from reading books to discuss potential markets and readers, to planning mini publicity campaigns for the launch of new titles. You will have the opportunity to write press releases and marketing copy, create effective social media posts, liaise directly with authors to support their publicity and help to plan book launch events in person and online. The wide scope of opportunities allows you to learn and develop key skills required in the publishing industry such as approaching audiences, understanding social media marketing strategies, creative thinking, research skills and more!


The successful candidate will have strong organisational skills, attention to detail and a collaborative approach to their work. The desire to offer fresh perspectives and contributions is key, as well as a genuine love and enthusiasm for books and the ability to talk effectively and engagingly about them.
