Are you looking to kickstart your career in publishing? Michael O’Mara Books, an independent publisher, is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Foreign Rights Assistant to join their team.
As part of the foreign sales department, you will help to support the team with general administrative tasks. You will be performing general duties ad hoc, managing co-editions, and drafting and dealing with sales contracts. Effective organisation will be key when liaising with the sales team, as you will be tasked with preparing materials for book fairs and sales trips. There may also be opportunities for you to attend these events in a supportive capacity.
The successful applicant will be an excellent multi-tasker and strong communicator with a meticulous eye for detail, capable of prioritising tasks and remaining calm under pressure. They should be willing to build relationships with both the foreign sales department and external contacts. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential, and familiarity or prior experience with data entry via Biblio would be advantageous. Strong foreign language skills are desirable, and any previous experience in publishing would beneficial. The position will be based in Michael O’Mara’s London office in Clapham. The company operates on a hybrid working model, with Tuesday to Thursday in the office and two days per week remote work.

Contracts Assistant at Simon and Schuster UK

The successful candidate will work within the Contracts department and report to the Contracts Manager. You will work alongside the Head of Contracts to provide essential administrative support as well as helping to negotiate and draft contractual documents under supervision. You will respond to internal and external queries, liaising with various departments and agents to do so. You will get a chance to work within both the adult and children’s divisions, gaining insight into the publishing industry as a whole.
The ideal candidate will have some knowledge and interest in law and contracts as well as familiarity with the publishing industry. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment and work independently when necessary. It will be beneficial to have some administrative or office environment experience, including Microsoft 365 and other basic IT skills.

The role will involve liaising with client publishers including Scholastic and Little Tiger, while providing invaluable support to the field sales team. You will also be tasked with uploading material onto various platforms, including the Bounce website (WordPress), Edelweiss and Bookshop.org.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about children’s publishing and will possess an understanding of the bookselling, publishing or retail landscape. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are paramount, alongside an enthusiastic approach and a proactive 'can-do' attitude.
