Closing Date: 18 February 2024

Salary: £26,500

Location: London or any of Hachette’s national offices

Looking to kickstart your career in publishing? Hachette UK has opened their 2024 traineeship programme.

This exciting opportunity is run in partnership with the literary agency Curtis Brown and the bookseller Waterstones. There are a total of ten placements on offer which will take trainees through every step of the publishing industry from pitch to distribution. As a trainee you will spend twelve months within one of Hachette’s trade divisions or their education business. You will specialise in either editorial, marketing and publicity or rights and audio.

Within the ten traineeships, five editorial placements are available, two of which are also combined with design or marketing placements. The marketing and publicity departments are offering two placements and there is also the opportunity of a placement which combines six months in rights and six months as part of the audio team. Successful candidates can also expect to spend a month at Waterstones to gain bookselling experience and understanding of consumer buyer behaviours.

Applicants should have a genuine interest in publishing and an enthusiasm for learning. You should be able to demonstrate good attention to detail, time management and prioritisation skills. Most importantly, you need to have a passion for Hachette UK’s values and publishing divisions.

The focus of this programme is to make publishing more accessible to underrepresented groups and with this in mind, Hachette UK is seeking candidates from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds and applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

These traineeships may be based at Hachette UK’s London office or at any Hachette UK national office. There is an opportunity for hybrid working with three days in-office and two days at home.

Placements begin in May 2024 and successful applicants can expect to attend a virtual assessment day on the 20 and 21 March.
